Commentary
These are the statues of the Five Hundred Disciples of the Buddha. People who complete the Buddhist ascetic practice and have reached the state of enlightenment are called “Arakan”. “Rakan” is a short form of Arakan. Along with the promotion of worshipping Buddha (Shakamuni), worshipping large numbers of Rakans such as 16, 18 or 500 became popular. Each Rakan has various supernatural powers and pursued the salvation of all living things. These statues were created in 2006 as one of the 1200th anniversary projects of the foundation of Zentsu-ji Temple.
