Commentary
This is a guidepost erected by Nakatsukasa Mohei. There are numerous guideposts that have been erected to aid pilgrims along their journey on their Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage to the 88 Sacred Places. Of these, the guideposts erected by Nakatsukasa Mohei, who is said to be the highest-ranking of the mountain priests for the Shikoku Sacred Places, are the most plentiful in number. Born in Oshima-gun of Suo Province (current Yamaguchi Prefecture) during the late Edo period, Mohei traveled in pilgrimage to the Shikoku Sacred Places 280 times over his lifetime, and there are 237 guideposts that still exist to this day that he erected along his journeys.
