Commentary
This is the Mikage Pine. This pine tree once grew on the banks of the Mikage (reflection) Pond. When Kobo Daishi (Kukai) was about to go studying abroad in Tang China, he sat on a branch of this pine tree and made himself appear as a reflection on the pond’s surface. He then created a self image and gave it to his lonely mother Tamayori Gozen.
