Commentary
This is the Gyakushuto tower of the Buddhist priest Honen for praying for one’s happy after life. Gyakushuto is a tower built by a person while still alive, to pray for a happy life after death. When the Buddhist priest Honen was exiled to the Sanuki region, he visited Zentsu-ji, the birthplace of Kobo Daishi whom he revered. This Gyakushuto stone tower was said to have been built then. It is made of five stones piled on top of each other to a height of around 130 cm, and was constructed by different stones from the early Muromachi period to the Momoyama period.
