Commentary
This is the Standing Statue of Sri-mahadevi; it is an important cultural property. Sri-mahadevi is the consort of Vaisravana in Buddhism; she is based on Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu in Hinduism. Worshippers pray to her as the goddess of happiness and prosperity. Almost the entire head and body of this statue have been carved from just one material, the Japanese nutmeg tree; the surface seems to have been painted initially. It features elements of sculptures from the early Heian period, such as a body that has depth, stern facial expression, and spiral pattern in the clothing. However, considering the carving techniques used to create the statue and its proportions and other features, it appears to have been sculpted during the end of the 10th Century to the first half of the 11th Century.
