Commentary

This is the Tenjin Shrine; it is a registered tangible cultural property. The base stone has 1914 (third year of the Taisho period) inscribed on it, which is when this shrine is thought to be built. Tenjin refers to the Heian period scholar, poet and politician Sugawara no Michizane, who became an enshrined deity (the god of learning). Michizane was demoted from an aristocratic rank, in which he worked to ensure good governance of the Sanuki province apparently, to a minor official post at Dazaifu in Kyushu.
