Commentary
This is the Kasamatsu Daishi Statue. This statue of Kobo Daishi was carved out of the trunk of a "furomatsu" (lit., ageless pine tree) that had withered due to insect damage, and it was built in 2003. The "furomatsu" used was a famous tree referred to as "Kasamatsu," and legend has it that the tree was planted by hand by Kobo Daishi himself.
