Commentary
This is also called “Kasamatsu” (sedge hat pine tree). It used to be approximately 4 meters in height and 18 meters in diameter. This famous pine tree with a beautiful figure looked like two sedge hats facing down stacked on each other. It is said to have been planted by hand by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) himself. The tree withered due to insect damage, so it was cut down in 2002. Its trunk was then saved, and the statue of Kobo Daishi was carved into it in the following year. The statue was named “Kasamatsu Daishi”.
