Commentary

Shinra Myojin is enshrined in this shrine. It is said that Shinra Myojin appeared in the boat when Chisho Daishi returned from Tang China to Japan. Having returned to Japan, Chisho Daishi looked for a place to offer the Buddhist sutras which he had brought back. Then, Shinra Myojin reappeared in his dream, and the Buddhist sutras were offered to Onjo-ji Temple To-in in Shiga prefecture as he had been told in his dream. The current Shinra Shrine serves as the local Shinto deity and has Susanoo no Mikoto as its enshrined deity.
