Konzou-ji Temple
kyakuden
Commentary
This is the Kyakuden (reception hall for guests). Upon being appointed to this region as commander of the Zentsu-ji 11th Infantry Brigade, General Nogi made use of the Kyakuden of Konzo-ji Temple for his lodging during the period from October 1898 to May 1901. Making use of four rooms of the Kyakuden including its parlor room, bedroom, dining room, and storage room, together with his beloved horse "Todorokigo" and his horse keeper Kamajiro, he engaged in his duties as if he were facing "wartime conditions." Currently, this structure is opened to the general public on the first Saturday in September of each year, and besides that, it is also used by monks as a gathering place.
