Commentary
This is the Hatsuka Bridge; it is a registered tangible cultural property. When the Tanjo-in Birthplace Complex was initially established, it was consecrated as a sacred place of the birth of Kobo Daishi, and previously the general public were not allowed to visit there. However, worship was allowed specially on the 20th (hatsuka) each month, the day before the commemoration of Kukai’s passing; this was also when people could cross the bridge.
