Commentary
This is the Mieido Image Hall; it is a registered tangible cultural property. The Tanjo-in Birthplace Complex is built on the ruins of the Saeki residence, where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) was born. Until the Edo period, this area functioned as an independent temple that was in charge of supervising and managing the entire Zentsu-ji grounds; the Mieido Image Hall was the center of its operations. Miei refers to the image of Kobo Daishi in the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and enshrined inside the miniature shrine within the Mieido Okuden contains a self-portrait of Kobo Daishi, the Mehiki Daishi-zo, which is usually kept hidden from the public. The current hall was built in 1831, and major repairs were done on it in 1937.
