Commentary
This is the Shinran Hall. It enshrines Kenshin Daishi Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism in Japan. Enshrined inside the black lacquered miniature shrine within the sanctum is a rare wooden statute of a smiling Shinran; the statue is also called Kamata-no-Miei. The Holy Priest Shinran once wanted to visit Zentsu-ji for himself, which is where the Master Priest Honen had also made a pilgrimage to. Unfortunately he was unable to fulfil this wish, and it is said this wooden statue was sent to Zentsuji by Shinran’s devotees to carry out his wish.
