Commentary
This is the Benten Shrine; it is a registered tangible cultural property. Looking at the inscriptions on the pedestal, historical plaque on the shrine’s pavilion and other features, the statue of Benzaiten is thought to be enshrined here in 1867 by imparting its deity from that of Kissho-ji Temple in Kumon area of Manno Town. Benzaiten is the Goddess of Eloquence, Music, and Art; she is the Buddhist equivalent of the Hindu Goddess Sarasvati. People worship her to receive abundant crops, avoid accidents and disasters, and increase their good fortune and prosperity.
