Commentary
This is the Buddhist tower that was built upon the decree of the shogun Ashikaga Takauji. It is a designated cultural property of Zentsu-ji city. In 1338, the warrior and statesman Ashikaga Takauji and his brother Tadayoshi ordered that one tower be built in each temple to pray for the nation’s peace, and in memorial of those who lost their lives in battles during the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This many-storied tower was built upon this decree, sometime during the early-to-mid Kamakura period.
